What Are the Major Objectives of Human Resources Theory?
This module covers the HRD function in organizations from a wide variety of perspectives. At the outset, after the introduction to the module in the previous article, it is time to look at some theoretical perspectives about the HRD function. When the field of management science and organizational behavior was in its infancy, the HRD function was envisaged as a department whose sole role was to look after payroll and wage negotiation. Concomitant with the rise of the services sector and the proliferation of technology and financial services companies, the role of the HRD function changed correspondingly. For instance, the RBV or the Resource Based View of organizations was conceptualized to place the HRD function as a department that would leverage the human resources from the perspective of them being sources of strategic advantage. For instance, many software and tech companies as well as other companies in the service sector routinely identify their employees as the chief assets and something that can give them competitive advantage over their rivals.
This book aims to encourage students and academics out of their comfort zones by offering the first comprehensive overview that encompasses all the constituent components of HRD, allowing the reader to clearly separate concepts within the field and provide a meaningful basis for detailed discussion and debate. This book serves as a comprehensive introductory text to the field of HRD, as well as an ideal platform for a more in-depth advanced study of the field. It is an invaluable resource for students of HRD, or any reader interested in how HRD can play a major role in oiling the gears of innovation within an organization. Human Resource Management: Theory & Practice
Human resources theory is a general term for the strategies, tactics and objectives used by business owners and managers to administer policies and procedures related to employees. While the specific HR objectives will vary between organizations depending on their particular needs and composition of the workforce, there are several major, overarching objectives that are generally seen to be important. One of the most important objectives of human resources theory, but perhaps one that is often overlooked, is the HR role in managing cost-effectiveness for the organization. While the finance and accounting function of a business is ultimately responsible for balancing the budget and controlling expenses, HR policies play a large role in managing the business's outgoing costs.
Human resource management is a process which involves around four basic functions- acquisition, development, motivation and maintenance of human resources. These basic elements are the key steps for achieving organizational goals. Sustainable human resources development must involve all three components, as seen in the diagram above.
