Basic Information about Mercury

Elemental or metallic mercury is a shiny, silver-white metal, historically referred to as quicksilver, and is liquid at room temperature. It is used in older thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs and some electrical switches. When dropped, elemental mercury breaks into smaller droplets which can go through small cracks or become strongly attached to certain materials. At room temperature, exposed elemental mercury can evaporate to become an invisible, odorless toxic vapor. If heated, it is a colorless, odorless gas.

Mercury (element)

Like cadmium, zinc and lead, mercury is a naturally occurring element known as a "heavy metal" and can be toxic to living organisms. The element's atomic mass is Mercury has a melting point of Droplets of liquid mercury are shiny and silver-white with a high surface tension, appearing rounded when on flat surfaces. The liquid is highly mobile and droplets combine easily due to low viscosity. The element also combines with other metals such as tin, copper, gold and silver to form mercury alloys known as amalgams. Fortunately, mercury does not form amalgam with iron, which allows for the element to be shipped in standard iron flasks containing 76 pounds, or

An element is the simplest form of matter that cannot be split into simpler substances or built from simpler substances by any ordinary chemical or physical method. There are elements known to us, out of which 92 are naturally occurring, while the rest have been prepared artificially. Elements are further classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids based on their properties, which are correlated with their placement in the periodic table. With the exception of hydrogen, all elements that form positive ions by losing electrons during chemical reactions are called metals. Thus metals are electropositive elements with relatively low ionization energies. They are characterized by bright luster, hardness, ability to resonate sound and are excellent conductors of heat and electricity. Metals are solids under normal conditions except for Mercury.

Elemental mercury is a silver-white metal that is a heavy liquid at ambient temperatures. Due to its high surface tension, it forms small, compact spherical droplets when released. While the droplets themselves are stable, the high vapor pressure of mercury encourages its evaporation.

This book provides a thorough understanding of amalgam metallurgy which is essential for academics, industrialists and postgraduates working in relevant fields. Guaranteed to bring a wealth of information, this book will be a welcome addition to the literature. Leonid Kozin is a leading Ukrainian electrochemist specialising in chemical technology, physical chemistry, electrochemistry and electro-hydrometallurgical treatment methods to achieve high-purity metals.

Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg and atomic number Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar mercuric sulfide. The red pigment vermilion is obtained by grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercuric sulfide. Mercury is used in thermometers , barometers , manometers , sphygmomanometers , float valves , mercury switches , mercury relays , fluorescent lamps and other devices, though concerns about the element's toxicity have led to mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers being largely phased out in clinical environments in favor of alternatives such as alcohol - or galinstan -filled glass thermometers and thermistor - or infrared -based electronic instruments. Likewise, mechanical pressure gauges and electronic strain gauge sensors have replaced mercury sphygmomanometers.
