Methodological behaviorism began as a reaction against the introspective psychology that dominated the lateth and earlyth centuries. Introspective psychologists such as Wilhelm Wundt maintained that the study of consciousness was the primary object of psychology. Their methodology was primarily introspective, relying heavily on first-person reports of sensations and the constituents of immediate experiences. Behaviorists such as J. Watson and B. Skinner rejected introspectionist methods as being subjective and unquantifiable. Instead, they focused on objectively observable, quantifiable events and behavior.

In terms of its general principles, behaviorism suggests that in classroom instruction, learning tasks should be broken down into small, discrete individual behaviors to be developed into good habits. The goal of the lesson is for the learner to make the pattern become a mechanical habit through imitation and repetition. The teacher provides the necessary stimulus by presenting a model of the pattern and giving prompts. When she is sure that the students are able to produce the pattern correctly, she then gives students further practice in the pattern to ensure that they master it and can produce it not only accurately, but also automatically.

Emphasis on behavior: students should be active respondents; people are most likely to learn when they actually have a chance to behave. Also, student learning must be evaluated; only measurable behavior changes can confirm that learning has taken place. Drill and practice: repetition of stimulus-response habits strengthens those habits. Breaking habits: one way to break a stimulus-response habit is to continue to present the stimulus until the individual is too tired to respond in the habitual way, or the exhaustion method. Also, the stimulus can be presented "faintly" so that the individual "learns" over time not to respond in the habitual manner, or the threshold method.

Learning theories are an organized set of principles explaining how individuals acquire, retain, and recall knowledge. By studying and knowing the different learning theories, we can better understand how learning occurs. The principles of the theories can be used as guidelines to help select instructional tools, techniques and strategies that promote learning. New behaviors or changes in behaviors are acquired through associations between stimuli and responses.
