There are various types of Casting Processes but out of which, I will be explaining only four types of casting processes in detail. They are. Sand Casting is a process in which the liquid molten metal is poured into the casting cavity whose shape is the same as that of the shape of the casting to be produced, allowed to solidify and after solidification, the casting part will be taken out by breaking the mold called as Sand Casting Process. With the help of sand casting process, cylinder blocks, machine tool beds, pistons, etc. Die Casting is a metal casting process which is characterized by forcing the molten metal into a mold cavity under high pressure or under gravity. If the flow of molten metal into the mold cavity is due to the gravitational force, then it is called Gravity Die Casting.
Sand casting is the most widely used metal casting process accounting for a major percentage of total cast in weight. During sand casting process, material is heated to the correct temperature to melt and sometimes treated to modify the chemical composition to achieve the required material properties. Then the molten metal is poured into a mould which has the desired shape cavity to cool down and solidify. To be able to understand any manufacturing process , first careful consideration must be given not only for its advantages but importantly for its potential limitations and process difficulties. To produce the best quality sand castings at the lowest possible cost, it is important that the designers give careful attention to several process requirements and understand the limitation of sand casting.
Along these advantages, casting has following disadvantages. It gives poor surface finish and mostly requires surface finish operation. Casting defects involves in this process. It gives low fatigue strength compare to forging. It is not economical for mass production.
