Mechanics is a calculus-based introduction to classical mechanics, including topics ranging from measurement to gravitational forces and oscillations. This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of these elementary physics principles, as well as their applications, and to enhance their conceptual understanding of physical laws. The introduction of data acquisition and analysis methods will be stressed in a laboratory setting. Physics is considered as one of the most difficult subjects in science. Often, physics lectures are flooded with heavy formulae, including calculus. In this course, efforts have been made to help students feel physics in addition to learning. Using minimal algebra without calculus, most of the key concepts in classical mechanics have been explained. Various real physics demonstrations also help students to grasp physics from everyday experience. The course covers the basics of Newtonian mechanics including oscillations and wave phenomena.

Waves and Oscillations: A Prelude to Quantum Mechanics places a unique emphasis on the deep connections between classical waves and oscillations and quantum mechanics. Most scientists and engineers understand these connections, but too often they are not stressed to students. This lively book uses these relationships to give additional motivation, without attempting to teach the quantum mechanics. In physics , mathematics , and related fields, a wave is a propagating dynamic disturbance change from equilibrium of one or more quantities, sometimes as described by a wave equation. In physical waves, at least two field quantities in the wave medium are involved. Waves can be periodic, in which case those quantities oscillate repeatedly about an equilibrium resting value at some frequency. When the entire waveform moves in one direction it is said to be a traveling wave ; by contrast, a pair of superimposed periodic waves traveling in opposite directions makes a standing wave. In a standing wave, the amplitude of vibration has nulls at some positions where the wave amplitude appears smaller or even zero.

Oscillations and Waves

Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time , of some measure about a central value often a point of equilibrium or between two or more different states. The term vibration is precisely used to describe mechanical oscillation. Familiar examples of oscillation include a swinging pendulum and alternating current.
