The test tubes shown here contain equal amounts of the specified motor oils. Identical metal spheres were dropped at the same time into each of the tubes, and a brief moment later, the spheres had fallen to the heights indicated in the illustration. Rank the motor oils in order of increasing viscosity, and explain your reasoning:.

Example — A needle 5 cm long can just rest on the surface of the water without wetting. What is its weight? A light square wireframe each side of which is 10 cm long hangs vertically in the water with one side just touching the water surface.

Numerical Problems on Surface Tension

Surface tension is a property of liquids that arises from unbalanced molecular cohesive forces at or near a surface. At an air water interface the surface tension results from the greater attraction of water molecules to each other due to cohesion than to the molecules in the air due to adhesion. The net effect is an inward force at its surface that causes water to behave as if its surface were covered with a stretched elastic membrane. Because of the relatively high attraction of water molecules for each other, water has a high surface tension. It is this strong interaction which also manifests in the other unusual property of water such as its high boiling point.

Grade 11 Physics Solution

Surface tension , property of a liquid surface displayed by its acting as if it were a stretched elastic membrane. This phenomenon can be observed in the nearly spherical shape of small drops of liquids and of soap bubbles. Because of this property, certain insects can stand on the surface of water. A razor blade also can be supported by the surface tension of water. The razor blade is not floating: if pushed through the surface, it sinks through the water. Surface tension depends mainly upon the forces of attraction between the particles within the given liquid and also upon the gas , solid , or liquid in contact with it.

Surface Tension and Water

Chapter List. The property of liquid by virtue of which it tries to occupy minimum surface area within the given volume is called surface tension. When a certain force is applied on a liquid through, then the work done by this force will be stored in the form of energy. Such energy is called free surface energy or elastic potential energy. We know that, the property of liquid by virtue of which, it tries to occupy minimum surface area within a given volume is called surface tension and a liquid having more surface tension occupies less area.

Figure 1. The soap bubbles in this photograph are caused by cohesive forces among molecules in liquids. Children blow soap bubbles and play in the spray of a sprinkler on a hot summer day.
