'Slaughtered like chickens': Eritrea heavily involved in Tigray conflict, say eyewitnesses

In early December, Ethiopian state television broadcast something unexpected: a fiery exchange between civilians in Shire, in the northern Tigray region, and Ethiopian soldiers, who had recently arrived in the area. Perhaps most revealing, however, was the implication that those responsible for the carnage were not Ethiopian federal troops, but outsiders. Pitched battles involving tanks and fighter jets — as well as militia from Amhara, which borders Tigray to the south — have flattened villages and emptied towns. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a bloody war between and , which claimed an estimated , lives. Earlier this month the former president of Tigray, Debretsion Gebremichael, accused Eritrean forces of mass looting.

The Ethiopia-Eritrea War

T he multiplicity of its proximate and distant historical causes, coupled with its diverse forms of manifestation, makes fitting the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict into neat conventional categories a very challenging undertaking. Analyzing and adopting policies and measures that would achieve its resolution, however, demands a prior ability to fit the conflict into known categories. Conflicts are commonly believed to fit into either the interstate international or the intra-state domestic categories. The latter is further divided into intercommunal or interethnic and intra-communal or intra-ethnic. The main argument of this chapter is that the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict defies attempts to fit it neatly into just one of these types. Intervention by the UN and its allied regional bodies hence will succeed in achieving sustainable peace between and within these two entities only to the extent that all the diverse forms of manifestation of the conflict are understood and addressed.

Inter-state wars are not one of the most salient features in the post-Cold War era. The literature on contemporary armed conflict, particularly those in the aftermath of the Cold War, tends to overlook the centrality of territory in the causation of war. However, a border incident between Eritrea and Ethiopia in led to a crisis which escalated. The war lasted two and a half years, leading to an estimated This border incident led to the loss of life on the Eritrean side Connell,
