Designing and Conducting Ethnographic Research: An Introduction

Designing and Conducting Ethnographic Research. The Ethnographer's Toolkit series begins with this primer, which introduces novice and expert practitioners alike to the process of ethnographic research, including answers to questions such as who should and can do ethnography, when it is used most fruitfully, and how research projects are carried out from conceptualization to the uses of research results. Written in practical, straightforward language, this new edition defines the qualitative research enterprise, links research strategies to theoretical paradigms, and outlines the ways in which an ethnographic study can be designed. Use Designing and Conducting Ethnographic Research as a guide to the entire Toolkit or as a stand-alone introduction to ethnographic research. Schensul, Jean J. Schensul, and Margaret D. Put simply, ethnographic research or ethnography describes UX research that is observational and done in context. Just as an anthropologist travels to observe and participate in another culture , a UX designer or researcher conducting ethnographic research puts themselves right next to their user, observing their process and seeking to understand the entire ecosystem in which that process takes place. HOW TO DO ETHNOGRAPHY RESEARCH

Ethnographic research is a qualitative research approach that involves observing variables in their natural environments or habitats in order to arrive at objective research outcomes. As the name suggests, ethnographic research has its roots in ethnography which is the in-depth study of people, cultures, habits and mutual differences. This type of systematic investigation interacts continuously with the variables and depends, almost entirely, on the data gathered from the observation of the research variables. Ethnographic research is sometimes referred to as a thick description because of its in-depth observation and description of the subjects. In recent times, ethnography has been adopted to the internet in the form of netnography.

Methodology definition and key characteristics are given. The stages of the research process are described including preparation, data gathering and recording, and analysis. Important issues such as reliability and validity are also discussed. Key Words: Ethnography, Field Research, Qualitative Research, Participant Observation, and Methodological Issues I recently had the pleasure of learning how to conduct ethnographic research for the first time. In this How To account I will describe the process by organizing my description around the following seven questions: 1. What is ethnography and what are its key characteristics?

As a form of inquiry, ethnography relies heavily on participant observation —on the researcher participating in the setting or with the people being studied, at least in some marginal role, and seeking to document, in detail, patterns of social interaction and the perspectives of participants, and to understand these in their local contexts.
