Animals: 7 StudyJams! Interactive Science Activities
Vertebrates are animals that have a spine. This unit helps students understand that vertebrates share common characteristics, including bone structure and major parts of the skeleton, and that vertebrates can be organized into five classes: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Each class of vertebrates can be distinguished from the others by its common characteristics, including body covering, body temperature, means of breathing, birth method, and other distinguishing features. In the read-first model, students begin by reading texts that help them build a foundation of understanding with the core science ideas of the unit. Then they engage in hands-on investigations and use other resources to explore examples related to the concepts they read about.
Animals can be classified into two main groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. The main difference between vertebrates and invertebrates is that invertebrates, like insects and flatworms, do not have a backbone or a spinal column. Examples of vertebrates include humans, birds, and snakes. Invertebrates have no backbone, while vertebrates have a well-developed internal skeleton of cartilage and bone and a highly developed brain that is enclosed by a skull. A nerve cord is enclosed by vertebrae — individual bones that make up a vertebrate's spine. Vertebrates have well-developed sensory organs, a respiratory system with either gills or lungs, and a bilateral symmetry with an advanced nervous system that further distinguishes them from invertebrates.
Science is all about classification, and the animal kingdom has two basic groups: those without backbones, invertebrates, and those with backbones, vertebrates. Some animals, like humans, have backbones, but many others do not. Just like plants, animals have to adapt to survive in their environments. And some of those adaptations, like zebra and tiger stripes, are pretty cool, too. What kind of animal has a shell? They are a special kind of invertebrate with a lot of unique characteristics. Just like plant cells, animal cells are workaholics.

In the primary classroom, we offer children vocabulary to help them classify their world. For example, we give them the terms large and small so that they can differentiate between the size of a tree and the size of a small insect. We offer them the names of geometric shapes so that they can identify the elliptical leaf on a tree or point out the octagonal shape of the stop sign. We also offer them terms to help them classify the objects in their world in a more scientific manner. We begin scientific classification by introducing the terms living and non-living.
These free Animal Classification worksheets are a great way for children of all ages to practice and improve their knowledge of animals as well as work on their fine motor skills as they cut and paste the animals into the correct columns. Scroll to the bottom of the post to download your free set! This makes it easier for scientists to study animals.
