The Montessori educational method has existed for over years, but evaluations of its effectiveness are scarce. This review paper has three aims, namely to 1 identify some key elements of the method, 2 review existing evaluations of Montessori education, and 3 review studies that do not explicitly evaluate Montessori education but which evaluate the key elements identified in 1. The goal of the paper is therefore to provide a review of the evidence base for Montessori education, with the dual aspirations of stimulating future research and helping teachers to better understand whether and why Montessori education might be effective.

Developmental psychology

Developmental psychology is the scientific study of how and why human beings change over the course of their life. Originally concerned with infants and children , the field has expanded to include adolescence , adult development , aging , and the entire lifespan. Developmental psychologists aim to explain how thinking, feeling, and behaviors change throughout life. This field examines change across three major dimensions: physical development , cognitive development , and social emotional development. Developmental psychology examines the influences of nature and nurture on the process of human development, and processes of change in context across time. Many researchers are interested in the interactions among personal characteristics, the individual's behavior, and environmental factors , including the social context and the built environment.

The media, through its dramatization of the dangers and risks children confront and pose, have created a well-established image of disenfranchised, hostile, and often-destructive children and adolescents. This image ignores the many children who are thriving as well as the possibility of positive outcomes for children and youth. Increasingly, it is understood that we need not only to prevent negative outcomes but to promote positive outcomes. What Do Children Need to Flourish? Conceptualizing and Measuring Indicators of Positive Development , part of the Search Series on Developmentally Attentive Community and Society, focuses on how scholars and practitioners can begin to build rigorous measures of the healthy behaviors and attitudes that result in positive outcomes for children and youth.

Imaginary friends also known as pretend friends , invisible friends or made-up friends are a psychological and social phenomenon where a friendship or other interpersonal relationship takes place in the imagination rather than external physical reality. Although they may seem very real to their creators, children usually understand that their imaginary friends are not real. However, Klausen and Passman report that imaginary companions were originally described as being supernatural creatures and spirits that were thought to connect people with their past lives. The era when children began having imaginary friends is unknown, but it is possible the phenomenon appeared in the mid—19th century when childhood was emphasized as an important time to play and imagine. In some studies, imaginary friends are defined as children impersonating a specific character imagined by them , or objects or toys that are personified. Research has shown that imaginary friends are a normative part of childhood and even adulthood. There is a difference between the common imaginary friends that many children create, and the imaginary friends of psychopathology.
